CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

In-Floor Services – Delivering water to patients – 9:00 am every other Tues. & Friday

Exercise Program – Monday or Wednesday every week – 10:45 am – 12:00 pm

Music Program – Tuesday afternoons every other week – 12:45 pm – 2:00 pm

Gift Shop – volunteers always needed

Chances Are – volunteers urgently needed! Must be available for an early morning start and capable of standing for prolonged periods of time. They can also use more men to help with clearing the outside bins.

SOME ACTIVITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS

 

GIFT SHOP :

Salespersons required. Greet customers, operate the cash and debit machines.  Wrap customer purchases. Shifts: Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Some “special sales” shifts may be necessary.

KNITTING :

Knit items to sell in the Gift Shop and at other locations. Our coordinator will assist in obtaining patterns and material as required. Work your own schedule.  Presently, we are knitting baby shawls, baby outfits, mitts and hats.

GROUP EXERCISE PROGRAM :

Volunteers help patients get to and from the Solarium and assist with some of the gentle exercises. The program runs Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:45 am to 12:00 pm.

TEEN VOLUNTEERS :

Weekend help for In-Patient services. Assist in fundraising and other activities as needed. Scheduling will be prepared in advance to assist students in planning their time.  Records will be maintained of hours worked.

TELEPHONE COMMITTEE :

You will contact assigned lists of members – usually 12 – and relay messages to the members on your list, approximately five times per year.  Upon completion of your call list you will advise your coordinator of the results.  Times will vary according to schedule.

VARIOUS OTHER DUTIES AS REQUIRED

 

CHANCES ARE :

Three Positions in our store, where donated items are received, sorted and sold.  All profits go to the Auxiliary.

COUNTER STAFF:

Greet customers, operate the cash register, package purchased items. Shifts are Tuesdays through Saturdays 10:00 am to 1:00 pm or 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

SORTERS:

Assist in sorting and displaying items for sale in the store.  The shifts are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 am to approximately 11:00 am.

HELPING HANDS:

Gentlemen to carry boxes, bags and other items in and out of store. Moderately heavy lifting.

DAY SURGERY / ENDOSCOPY

Assist patients and caregivers as required. Ensure all beds etc. are cleaned.  Prepare gowns and other garments used by patients. The shifts may be 3-4 hours depending upon the scheduled treatment. Shifts are Monday and Wednesday from 7:30 am to 11:30 am and from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm as required and once per month on a Tuesday.

IN FLOOR SERVICE

Volunteers retrieve water jugs and glasses from patients’ rooms, wash them in DW, fill with ice-water and return to rooms.  Task takes 1-1.5 hours.

“WAYFINDER”

“Way-finder” is a greeter role as well as an information desk for those accessing the hospital. The way-finder will provide directions as to the location of various clinics and departments within hospital.

VISITING VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers spend time with the patients in conversation or playing games, reading, coloring etc.

FUNDRAISING

Half-Marathon help is required to assist in raising funds for the Auxiliary. Many hands are needed to make these functions successful. Meetings are held as needed to assign tasks and schedule meetings to consider new ideas.

ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER ROLES:

  • Staff the Volunteer Tent at various events.
  • Assist the Foundation at the Festival of Lights and other functions.

All requests for these duties will be scheduled in advance.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS :
At the initial interview you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire for future scheduling and to sign a confidentiality form required by the Hospital. A Police Check is mandatory. We will provide you with a letter which will grant a discount on the usual fee for this service. Once you receive the Police Check, contact the Director of Volunteers so that training arrangements may be scheduled.

SCHEDULING :

Each volunteer group has a scheduler who will contact the volunteers and notify them of their shifts one month in advance.  For example—you would be made aware of your November schedule in the month of October
